"Literary criticism ...hala. this is a circus.

"Literary criticism is the study, discussion, evaluation, and interpretation of literature. Modern literary criticism is often informed by literary theory, which is the philosophical discussion of its methods and goals. Though the two activities are closely related, literary critics are not always, and have not always been, theorists.

Whether or not literary criticism should be considered a separate field of inquiry from literary theory, or conversely from book reviewing, is a matter of some controversy. For example, the Johns Hopkins Guide to Literary Theory and Criticism draws no distinction between literary theory and literary criticism, and almost always uses the terms together to describe the same concept. Some critics consider literary criticism a practical application of literary theory, because criticism always deals directly with particular literary works, while theory may be more general or abstract."

- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literary_criticismdon pinote de la babhahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11442564814445956585noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8677777529083778915.post-52420926621354459222009-06-09T09:30:14.662-07:002009-06-09T09:30:14.662-07:00Ang mga Theories dili absolutes, kini sila mga pos...Ang mga Theories dili absolutes, kini sila mga posibilidad, spekyulasyon...elusive chains of thought.

Kadtong musulat nga "now Baudillard has shown that. . . or "with our better understanding of new criticism issues. . .

I assured Bambi that this was a diverse panel. Naa si Butch nga French and German kaayo og leaning sa iyang structural and post-structural discourses. Naa si Januar and Adonis nga more leaning on postmodernism. Naa pud si Tonton Kintanar nga modernist and postmodernist but who wants to deviate from the theoretical lenses kay na-disillusion na ug mas ganahan siya mo-discover sa iyang kaugalingon gyud nga discourse or refraction of these existing theories.

But looking back, brilliant kaayo ang gibuhat ni Nyor Ernie. He did provoke me to decide on a lot of things about that poem.

Having said all this, I hope sa imong pagsulti nga "dili jackstone or chinese garter nga pulos lang reflexes" wala toy pakapin nga tone of condescension toward Bambi's opinion on Jona's work. Nga wala ka nagpasabut nga Bambi's opinion was not good enough for you. And apparently dili innocent reading ang gibuhat ni Bambi. Yes, it was devoid of literary construct, but it was not less than anyone's opinion in this panel.

Nindot kaayo imong assertion sa simulacrum ni Baudrillard.AGDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13957619107361036565noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8677777529083778915.post-78364614154792111112009-06-07T23:17:18.487-07:002009-06-07T23:17:18.487-07:00Januar says, “i bring up the theories only because...Januar says, “i bring up the theories only because this is the most proper venue. ang-ang man og adto nako ni ihunghong sa nagkayat sa kamagayan.”

And then again I felt that my suspicion of a philosophical puzzle inherent in the poem was confirmed. And it is precisely because of the poem’s structure and progression that I find the assertion that each part could stand on its own as rather missing the whole point. The parts and their relationships reinforce the philosophy the poem asserts. Given this, I find myself at the brink of prescribing ways to improve the poem, but eventually, I did not because maybe it might suffice to bring into consciousness what Jona can otherwise also articulate in prose as much as in a poem. I really don’t know, I leave it to her. She anyway expressed intention to rid the poem of its unwanted edges and rub it to a shine. Eventually, I find that very modest, an indication of maturity.AGDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13957619107361036565noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8677777529083778915.post-14233951579716888822009-06-07T22:37:50.561-07:002009-06-07T22:37:50.561-07:00mikaliring, mikaliring... aniay dugang pagpatin-aw...mikaliring, mikaliring... aniay dugang pagpatin-aw ni januar:

Akong gipili nga unahon usa pagsabot kon unsay gustong isulti sa balak ni Jona. And the poem being yet in progress or imperfect in its text, ingon ko dili lang usa ko, regardless of its odds and ends, mo-farm out or nitpick sa mga aspetong teknikal o mga nitty-gritties sa linggwahe. Rather, I tried to understand its intentions sa hinaut nga kon akong masabtan, mahimo na kong mo-prescribe kon unsaon pagtul-id kon ugaling dunay kahibat ang maong balak. Ug tuod man, tungod niana nga cautiousness, misuway ko ug bungat sa teyoriya nga Gestalt isip pagpanglaktud nga mohatud kanako sa unsa man ang kahulogan o unsay buot ipasabot sa maong balak. Gestalt being my instrument to get around the problematics in the details and to bring me rather swiftly into the poem’s intention.

Somehow, I sense the idea of “reality” and “refraction” or “mediation” in the first two parts. I felt the presence of a very conscious attempt at presenting a philosophical puzzle (and, here, I hope you understand why I said Borgesian and maong balak—for the sheer reason of its playfulness with philosophy). Medyo nakulbaan ko gamay that I could be overreading, but I felt I was in good hands pag-abot sa ikatulo nga stanza. I realize my initial mistrust at the first two stanzas was somehow condescending in nature.

The idea of mediation undergoes various incarnations. Usa ka telebisyon ug bildo sa bintana sa tindahan sa first stanza, in a very metropolitan milieu. Ikaduha, usa ka salamin that seems to be at the center of existential affirmation of each member of the family, and in contrast, sa usa ka rural milieu. (I used the term pastoral very loosely earlier). Dunay implosion of reality nga nahitabo as the poem progresses. It is as though the external reality finds itself framed in the television, in the glass casement, in the mirror, and eventually a kind of recreation or explosion occurs in the manner of the scattered shards in the third paragraph. If that is not enough to make you feel the philosophical undercurrents of the poem, then I don’t know what will. At the back of my mind, too, was Marshall McLuhan, but I was bent on bringing out Baudrillard’s “loss of the real” or his assertion that in this day and age, ang mga image-creating technologies, sama sa telebisyon (and in this recent case, the mirror, too)—are those that proliferate self-generating, self-mirroring, depthless image. “The real is now defined in terms of the media in which it moves.” And when the poem ends with a broken mirror, it describes the postmodern condition of plurality and pastiche, the “absent center” or the condition of ontological uncertainty. I may have an inkling where the poem was coming from because I know the writer, and besides, no work of literature is theory-free or innocent. On the other hand, pwede sad and kang McLuhan nga “medium is the message.” Although mas radical kang Baudrillard kay and “appearance” mismo and “reality.” Ang kalibutan according to Disneyland, etc. etc.

there is no such thing as "innocent reading" or "uninformed writing." dili man ni duwa-duwa sa jackstone or chinese garter nga pulos lang reflexes. sayud man ta nga while writing is also part inspiration, it is also mostly craft. that is why as much as we spend time intellectualizing our craft, on the other end of the equation, it also deserves a rather intellectual engagement. mao na tingali ang gitawag og "close reading." dili tungod aron patyon ang usa ka balak, kon dili sabton nimo ang katam-is o kabangis o kapait niini--an act that it mostly reverential. the role of workshops is not to talk about literature, but to talk of literature. we can always drop the theories and just talk about inspiration, but that might as well be over bottles of beer. but we're in a workshop site (and no small thanks to adonis for expediting this party), mao nang seryosuhon nato og basa ang balak. (pakapinan usahay og ulog-ulog o bugal-bugal aron di ta makatulog) i bring up the theories only because this is the most proper venue. ang-ang man og adto nako ni ihunghong sa nagkayat sa kamagayan. natural, dinhi ra, and only because of some confidence that self-respecting writers and critics will take it in no other way but as plain participation in this votive act of reading poetry or what may pass as literature in the end.

new criticism believes that there is such a thing as a determinate or ontologically stable "poem itself." that's what we try to find out each time we read a poem. how does it achieve a kind of coherence? without that particular center from which all images are tethered into, everything collapses. ingon ana ra man tingali na. so that's why almost always, we find ourselves trying to connect the relationship of all the parts of a text. it is no accident that jona divided her poem into three parts. so i took it in its own terms, that's why i tried to find out what connects all three. i could not locate a meaning or make a certain kind of engagement unless i draw out a few theories. if you don't find anything borgesian or any of those i mentioned in my reading of jona's poem, i don't think that's anyone's problem. the poem exists regardless of how we read it.

JONA, I'm still on a self-imposed retreat, but when I had time last night I did check out the Kulitog website.

I came across your works, and the interesting exchanges among panelists.

I am breaking my rule, for now, because I want to tell you that I find you one of the promising poets of your generation--a generation that will turn the page of our Cebuano literary history.

And because of this, I truly believe that such talent demands the most honest opinion from a panelist, not to purposely discourage you, but to help you see the virtues and weaknesses of your work--to help you be more objective and determined in arriving at your own poetics.

This is why Bambi, in the first place, lays down her raw opinion, devoid of any literary constructs and fancy but misleading claims that may distract you from where your writing should be. This is not about who is the better critic here. This is about your works and your journey toward your own voice and as I mentioned above, your own poetics.

Bambi, Butch, and Adonis have told you what you need to hear, and not what you want to hear, because Kulitog is about strengthening your generation of writers, and encouraging a culture of criticism and writing. These are the people who truly care for you as a poet, and your works above all, and that's why they take so much time reading your works, praising what needs to be praised. Those lines, however, that may hurt your poem will surely be confronted with deeply cutting statements.

Ang balak, to quote the venerable Joe Tomarong, kay morag babaye. And so on and so forth.

Kon ang buot idul-it sa tagsulat mao ang contrast sa simulacrum as reality (stanza 1) ug sa reality as reality (stanzas 2 & 3), makaingon ta, So what? Unsa may punto ani? Gani, unsa may contrast, ug unsa may papel ani sa atong pagsinati sa balak? Asa ta man ni makit-i? Tingali, mas naporma ning balaka kon gi-frame pa under Hegelian dialectics, diin ang stanza 3 naghiusa sa mga rumbo sa preceding 2 stanzas—but that’s another story, er, poem. As it stands, from postmodernist to pastoral to neo-romantic deep imagist, yagaw gamay.

Kabahin sa Gestalt ug Borgesin multiplicity, way koy problema.
